— The Grip Bouldering Team
Grip Bouldering is excited to host two ASCL (American Scholastic Climbing League) competitions this season, welcoming student climbers from K–12 schools across Colorado’s Western Slope. These events are a chance for youth climbers to challenge themselves, represent their schools, and connect with peers in a fun, supportive environment.
Each competition will run all day, with climbers tackling bouldering problems designed for a range of skill levels. Coaches, families, and spectators are welcome to attend and cheer on their athletes.
Dates: December 6th & January 31st
Location: Grip Bouldering, 716 Scarlet St, Grand Junction, CO
Divisions: K–12 (based on ASCL regional format)

The American Scholastic Climbing League is a non-profit 501C3 created in May of 2018 following a ten-year successful run of the Colorado High School Climbing League.
Our goal is to connect climbers in an atmosphere of positive competition and to foster the best aspects of climbing in middle and high school students

Competition Teams
For dedicated youth climbers aspiring to compete at higher levels, the Grip Competition Team offers advanced training and coaching. Led by experienced coaches like Mike Kimmel, who has over 15 years of experience developing youth climbing programs, this team focuses on elevating climbers' abilities to national and international standards

Development team
Aimed at climbers aged 10-18, the Grip Development Team caters to both new and experienced youth climbers looking to enhance their skills and deepen their passion for climbing. This program serves as the initial pathway toward joining the competition team

Grip Kids Club
Designed for children aged 6-10, the Grip Kid's Club offers a fun and supportive environment where young climbers can learn foundational skills, stay active, and make new friends. It's an excellent starting point for those aspiring to join the competition team in the future

Homeschool Program
Open to all ages of any skill level. The Grip Bouldering Homeschool Program is designed to keep little climbers moving, learning, and connecting all summer long.
$20 Drop In, program runs last Wednesday of each month.

Meet the Coaches

Mike Kimmel
Mike is the head coach for the Grip Competition team, and has 15 years of experience in building and developing youth programs for climbing gyms throughout the Western US. He has coached hundreds of climbers and watched many excel to both the national and international stage. He is a dedicated rock climber himself, continuing to focus on improvement and constantly researching the newest methodologies of climbing science to help his athletes

Cody Abshear
Cody has been coaching rock climbing for most of the last decade, and his three boys are all dedicated competitive climbers. In addition to competition climbing, Cody is constantly striving to instill the values of both sportsmanship and enjoyment of the natural environment in outdoor rock climbing

Carson Abshear
Carson brings energy and focus to every session, helping young climbers build both skill and confidence on the wall. Known for their supportive coaching style and attention to detail, Carson creates a fun, growth-centered environment for all ages

Lizzi Hendricks
Lizzie brings a fresh and energetic approach to youth climbing, creating an environment where kids feel encouraged to explore, move, and grow.

Wyatt Davis
Wyatt is a passionate and patient coach who makes climbing accessible and exciting for every athlete. With a calm and encouraging approach, Wyatt focuses on helping youth develop strong fundamentals and a love for the sport.

Ethan Lott
Ethan’s coaching style is built on clarity, patience, and challenge. He guides youth climbers through technique, movement awareness, and safe progression.
